Anxiety and Fear: Using Hypnosis to get Relief

It was wonderful to receive such great response to my posts about Fear and Procrastination.  It is great to know so many are reading and following my posts.  Thank all of you who have written in with questions and for the phone calls asking for help.  I’ll continue to post with more information on causes and solutions for Anxiety, Procrastination, Panic and Fear.

Hypnosis for Anxiety and Fear

One of the most widely asked questions was about hypnosis and ways to use it to get relief from anxiety and fear.  There are two types of hypnosis.  The Transformations System developed at the Anxiety Control Center, uses both of these hypnotic methods and combines it with cognitive and behavioral therapy techniques, providing a revolutionary treatment for anxiety, panic and grief, as well as many other life problems.

Hypnosis is Not a Magic Act, but it Can Feel Like Magic

For many people hypnosis is a word filled with magical connotations.  Upon hearing it, many people think of men with goatees and top hats, waving watches in the air and turning people into chickens.  However, in reality, hypnosis is NOT a magic act, but a way of getting in touch with the deeper regions of the mind.  I have been practicing hypnosis for over 2 years and personally it has gotten me through many issues.  I have relied on self-hypnosis to speed the recover of a broken bones, and have used it to relieve pain until I could be seen by a doctor.   Although I believe fully in the mind-body connection, yet there are times we need to have the help of traditional medical doctors, when self-hypnosis is combined with medical care it can create healing that wouldn’t be possible with either approach alone.   Hypnosis is now even used in hospitals with burn patients, in childbirth, and with relief of pain.

The Mind Causes Issues… and Also Fixes Issues

Hypnosis is a legitimate and immensely useful approach to working with the mind to heal not only emotional issues but those physical ones.   I have been using the Transformation System with migraines and irritable bowel syndrome for over 10 years and results are miraculous!

Fears About Hypnosis

The two top fears that people have about hypnosis and hypnotic work are that they might feel
1) Out of control
2) Doing something that embarrassing because of a hypnotic suggestion.

But, in actuality no matter what type of hypnosis is used (Classical or Ericksonian) you can’t be forced to do anything you don’t want to do.  Your body will not accept suggestions that are not right for you, or not in alignment with your inner values. If it were possible to “force” people then those who wanted to stop any habit would immediately find themselves acting differently.  But the truth is that hypnosis will only stop a habit when you are in complete agreement and want to stop the habit. It is necessary to resolve the underlying issues at the root the habit for hypnotic suggestions to “hold.”  I have found that in a trance state you not only remain in complete control of your actions but also are very true to yourself.

With a little humor, I tell my clients that if the could quickly go into a trance state, when people make requests of them, they’d find it easier say “no” to the requests that they don’t want to do than they do in the normal conscious state.

Whenever I do a workshop, a consultation or hypo-therapy I make sure the participants are aware that they can remain awake and aware,  even as the are doing transformational work.  Actually remaining awake, aware, and totally in control, while in trance is important because you, the participant are actually creating the change.

If you have questions send me your question and email address and I will answer personally.

Everyone Goes Into Trance

I like to tell the story of a client of mine who brought in a cartoon to therapy one day.  In this cartoon there was a man upside down,  with his feet stuck to the ceiling, and the caption was  “I still don’t think I am hypnotized.”  I loved this cartoon because it so aptly illustrates an important point about hypnosis:  You can make immense changes in your life without feeling hypnotized.  Yet the trance state helps you to access deep within where it is possible to make positive changes with apparent ease.

Is Hypnosis Right For Me?

Of course, the question remains, how do you know if hypnosis is right for you?   The truth is that almost everyone can be hypnotized.  If you have a intelligent, creative mind, if can create fear by just thinking about things, or asking the “what if” question, then you are already using your mind to do self-hypnosis – only in a negative way.

There are many different ways to get relief from problems.  Using hypnosis is just one of them. Of course it is one I highly recommend, because it helps you to quickly gain insight and to change old habits.  Using hypnosis to go into a trance state gives you the ability to get to the underlying root of the problem and to fix it there at the root. But is just one technique for getting relief.  The art of the therapist is to  ask the right questions  so they know how to plan a unique program using the right techniques that will work best for you.    If you are willing to keep an open mind and to stay curious as you work with your hypno-therapist you too can overcome what ever challenge you are dealing with.

But don’t worry if you are not comfortable with hypnosis.  You can still overcome a challenge,  though it may take longer.  Sometimes, for some people, the long way around is better.  Therefore when you come in for your first session  ask as many questions as you want.  These questions will help in many ways.  First it sets the stage for us working together.  Hypno-therapy is a relationship with both the hypnotherapist and the client working together. The second reason to ask questions is that as you get answers you can begin to make decisions and educated choices.
