Misconceptions and Facts about Hypnosis 1A

The following information comes from a training Audrey did for new hypno-therapists.  We thought that  this transcription might be of interest to the lay public, even thought it is written for the clinician.

There are a number of misconceptions that people may have about hypnosis.  Some of these misconceptions are a result of movies a person may have seen, or from seeing a stage hypnotist seemingly control the “subjects”.

When a client comes in for therapy they may fear that they will be asleep, unconscious or “knocked out” during trance.  As a therapist it is important to talk about this before doing any hypnosis. Even though, in the movies, a hypnotized person may appear to be asleep, in actuality they are awake and aware, although their eyes may be closed.  In the hypnotic or trance state, a person is actually in a heightened state of awareness, which facilitates receptivity to suggestions.

Another fear that people may have is that they  “surrender their will”, or that only the weak minded can be hypnotized.   These beliefs get in the way, of successful treatment and give the hypnotist far more power than s/he actually has. It is important to tell clients that all hypnosis is actually self-hypnosis, and that best hypnotic “subjects” are creative and intelligent people who are capable of visualizing.
