Have you ever had this happen?
You truly want to achieve a specific goal.  You have the best of intentions and you are doing what you’ve been told will get you the results you desire.  You’ve spent weeks  (months or years) repeating this phrase in the hope of manifesting what you desire.  Yet, even after all this work you are frustrated and still blocked from getting what you desire?

Learn what might be getting in the way.

If this has happened to you there is a good possibility that the phrase, visualization or mantra has a hidden, unwanted, negative message or the goal might not be in alignment with your deepest beliefs about yourself.

or visualization is not working the way you want?

OK, let’s start by looking at what a mantra is really about.  After you know more about mantras it will be easier to move to the the next step where you can uncover what gets in the way of manifesting what you want.  There is a easy to learn formula for changing unwanted mantras (the negative self talk that gets in the way in life, relationships and career).

First  3 Vital things to know about your own thoughts.
1. Thoughts have vibrations.
   a. Positive, empowering thoughts will attract the other positive ones.
   b. Negative, fearful thoughts will attract more negative ones.

2. What you persistently hold in your mind will become part of the workings of your unconscious mind.

3. It is possible to tap into hidden potential when you know how to use your thoughts to activate the unconscious part of the mind. This is the part of the mind that makes manifesting possible.

What are Mantras?
Quite simply, mantras are the things we say to ourself.  It can be the inner voice that runs in the back of the mind, or the things you believe to be true about yourself. A mantra can be what you say to yourself to get psyched up for a big meeting,  a competition or a social event.  It can be what you say to yourself in order to stay positive and look on the bright side when life is getting you down.

Another way that people think about a mantra is how it is used in eastern religions.  And although you might not use a fancy name for it the chances are that you probably use mantras yourself, everyday.

When a mantra is positive and constructive it can help us enjoy life by creating positive feelings.  Yet, many times we are using negative mantras without even being aware of it.  These are the things we say or believe that  create self-doubt and makes us fear what we do won’t be good enough,

For example:  You believe you are good at things, a quick learner, highly intelligent or creative.  These beliefs (inner thoughts) will effect your reactions wen taking on a new challenge.  On the other hand if you have negative, disempowering beliefs (inner thought) you will be very different when faced with a difficult challenge.

I was working with Charlie who loved and was excellent at golf. Yet even with all of his skill he had gotten into a negative mind set that was getting in the way of his game.  Even people who are excellent at things can create thoughts that get in the way of true potential.

After hitting a really horrible shot where the ball ended up in the sand trap, he started a negative mantra (thoughts) that began to hinder the rest of his game.  Making one bad shot in golf  wouldn’t be a problem if he continued to tap into the knowing that he is really good at this sport, a natural athlete.  It became a problem because his thoughts went into the negative and that started to stimulate other thoughts.   Although Charlie didn’t realize it at the time it started with a few small negative thoughts:  I flubbed it, I was doing so well, now I’ll never get back on track.  This then triggered a deeper and more destructive thought: I can’t believe I made this stupid mistake.   It was this deeper feeling of making mistakes that opened up the floodgates, tapping into earlier times in life where he made mistakes.   And the cycle of negative thoughts began to intensify, creating real distress in other parts of his life.  No matter how intelligent, creative and successful you are, negative mantras and thoughts can cause stress and even self-doubt.

By the time he came to me for help, his negative thoughts had gotten so entrenched that it was affecting how he felt about himself at work and in his relationships.

This cycle would have been very different if Charlie’s inner belief about making mistakes was different.  He would have been  able to put a badly played hole out of his mind and start fresh on the next hole.

But for Charlie and for many of us negative thoughts can bring up earlier memories and when these add up it can get in the way of focus, causing anxiety and worry.

Negative mantras can take the joy out of the things.
Negatives mantras (even the ones we are not aware of – the ones that play in the back of the mind) can cause us to doubt our own talents or abilities. They can cause us to feel responsible or guilty and they can even get in the way in our goals.    The feelings caused by negative thoughts and mantras can lead to anxiety, procrastination and depression.

7-steps to stop negative mantras and negative thoughts.

1. The first step is to recognize that a negative mantras is running.
2. Notice your body.  Do a body scan to notice any tension or discomfort anywhere.
3. Paying attention to uncomfortable feelings.
4. Stop and ask yourself what is this about? Just breath and listen in for an answer. (www.anxietycontrolcenter.com/calm for the free mind calming video guide)
5. Notice any dis-empowering or negative thoughts, and write them down.
6. Create 2 alternative and positive things that might be true to replace the negative thought.
7. At first it may take awhile to become aware of negative mantras and thoughts so use steps 1 – 5 again and again.  With time and practice, the hidden thoughts will begin to emerge.

Whenever negative thoughts and images move through your mind they will have an effect on your mood. So pay attention to your mood, this is a signal that there might be a negative mantra running.

Sometimes we are aware of our harmful, negative thoughts, but many times these thoughts move so quickly through the mind, that we aren’t aware of what is causing the change in mood, added stress or worry.  When tension and stress hits, look for negative thoughts

No matter how intelligent, creative and successful you are, negative mantras and thoughts can cause stress and even self-doubt.
